What is Shamanic Breathwork?

Distilled from Ancient Cultures

Dr. Stanislav Grof, co-founder of transpersonal psychology and clinical researcher, along with his wife Christina, developed Holotropic Breathwork while in residence at the Esalen Institute during the 1970s. It was based on previous decades of consciousness research and motivated by the desire to reproduce the mind-expanding experiences of the psychedelic era through safe and natural means.

Recognizing that World traditions have long used breath and music to induce trance states, the Grofs developed Holotropic Breathwork to transcend cultural, religious and psychotherapeutic confines. They drew on the commonalities among approaches that all used the breath, while omitting beliefs and practices that are not universally necessary to directly experience ones deep psyche.

Shamanic Breathwork is Born

Linda Star Wolf Ph.D. started out as a licensed therapist in the mental health and addictions fields before she began working with the Grofs in those early days at Esalen and her journey into breathwork became her passion. She also studied shamanic earth wisdom teachings with a Seneca Wolf Clan elder, Grandmother Twylah Nitsch, who adopted Linda as a Spiritual Granddaughter, giving her the spirit name of Star Wolf. The Shamanic Breathwork® Process is a synthesis of her personal exploration and direct healing experiences with breathwork, shamanic wisdom, depth psychology and addictions recovery methods.

Linda Star Wolf has been teaching and merging ancient wisdom with modern day consciousness for over 35 years through her organization Venus Rising Association for Transformation.

Community + Container

  • Here at Devine Alchemy we recognize and respect all faiths. The practice of Shamanic Breathwork is nonsectarian and would only add to your current spiritual practice, as well as aid those who are seeking to rekindle their connection to the Divine.

  • When we gather, we are creating a sacred container, a safe space for all to relax, let go, and travel deep within. We support each other to do the work we need to heal. We honor the light and dark in each of us. In these circles we dance with our shadows, for as St. Paul said, “Everything exposed to the light becomes the light.” Sensitive subjects may arise in processing, but this is an opportunity to connect deeply with the heart of another, honor their vulnerability, and reflect on how their stories relate to our own. We learn from their perspectives. We support our brave brothers and sisters on their healing path, and respect that what is shared in the circle remains in the circle.

what it looks like

This Ain’t Your Mama’s Pranayama

We do not sit meditatively breathing in one nostril and out the other while guiding you to your happy place (although we love that too). In the warmth and safety of the container we have set, you don a blindfold to help focus your attention inward, lay down, connect to your guides, and begin the breath. Chakra attuned music guides your journey into this very active practice. You are directly engaging in an altered state of consciousness. Here you can access the deepest parts of yourself; the pain and trauma you have stored in your cellular memory. What comes up comes up for your highest good, what comes up comes up for healing, but most importantly what comes up comes up to come out. It’s different for everyone and it’s different every time.

Lessons Learned From The Iceman

Wim Hof, founder of the Wim Hof Method, is one of the only pioneers of Breathwork to partner with modern science strictly for the purpose of uncovering it’s affects on the human body, and their discoveries have been truly astounding. We could write a novel (and Wim has) trying to explain all of the biological mumbo-jumbo, but instead we’ll give you the reader’s digest version and if you want to dive deeper you can check out his research here:

It jumpstarts the mitochondria in every cell of your body by creating adenosine triphosphate or “ATP” that will last longer and in a far more efficient way (ATP is the fuel that your cells need to do literally anything), alkalizes and oxygenates your blood (this is important because things like foreign bacteria, viruses, and cancers cannot survive in an alkaline environment), supports your Autonomic Nervous System and boosts your Immune System, strengthens the Cardiovascular System, generates more energy in your body, increases endurance, detoxes your lymph nodes and skin, and balances your thyroid hormones.
